Hello, fellow travellers, I am Vanshika from Dehradun.
I am here to share about my family trip to Tungnath and Chandrashila. Take you on a journey through those mystical heights and share the mountain adventure!
The Journey Begins: Route to Tungnath and Chandrashila
Our family are all big fans of travel and started on a road trip from Dehradun to Tungnatha, a town located in the lap of the Himalayas. We were covering a distance of 262.9 km. Our car journey took approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes, enjoying the scenic views and passing through lovely mountain villages along the way.
Trek Distance:
- Tungnath: approximately 3.5 km.
- Tungnath to Chandrashila: a challenging 1.5 km.
Accommodation at Tungnath Trip: Moon Hotel
Our place for the trip was the cosy Moon Hotel in Tungnath. The mountain views from our rooms were absolutely stunning, and the fresh mountain air gave us a rejuvenating energy. Moon Hotel Tungnath in Chopta offers 3-star accommodation with a garden, terrace, and restaurant. They even provide karaoke and room service for guests. If you’re wondering about the nearest airport, it’s Dehradun Airport, located 204 km away from the hotel.
Tungnath and Chandrashila Trek:
- Tungnath: The hike to Tungnath, one of the Panch Kedars, was both a spiritual and physical adventure. Situated at 3,680 metres, the temple provided breathtaking views of the nearby peaks. The 3.5-kilometre trek was tough but worth it, revealing stunning mountain scenery at every turn.
- Chandrashila: The true excitement began when we continued our journey to Chandrashila from Tungnath. The 1.5-kilometre trek, reaching an altitude of 4,130 metres, challenged our stamina. Yet, reaching the summit was a remarkable achievement, offering breathtaking views of Himalayan giants like Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba.
The environment was truly magical, with tall pine trees, winding streams, and occasional glimpses of wildlife creating a striking display of nature’s beauty. The fresh mountain air and the melody of birds accompanied us throughout the trek.
Famous foods to try:
The local cuisine was a pleasure for our taste buds. We savoured Garhwali specialities like Aloo Ke Gutke, Mandua ki Roti, and Bal Mithai, a sweet treat native to the region.
The best time to visit Tungnath and Chandrashila
The ideal time to visit Tungnath is from April to November. The best time to go on this trek would be during the summer and autumn months.
For an exciting Chandrashila trek, the best time is from March to May and September to November. During these months, the weather is perfect, with pleasant temperatures and clear skies.
Necessary things to pack:
- Sturdy trekking shoes for rocky terrain.
- Warm clothing, as temperatures can drop extremely.
- Pack water bottles to stay hydrated.
- Snacks like energy bars and nuts provide quick boosts.
- Sunscreen and sunglasses are required due to the high altitudes.
Tips for travellers:
- Start the trek early to witness the sunrise from Chandrashila.
- Acclimatise to the altitude by taking it slow and steady.
- Respect the environment; carry back all waste.
As we came down from the high peaks of Chandrashila, our hearts were filled with joy, and our energy was renewed. This family adventure not only brought us closer but also created memories that will stay with us forever.
