Kinnaur celebrates Holi uniquely and traditionally. My memorable experience last year in Kalpa, catching the Holi festival in the Kinnaur Valley, was truly special.
Villagers gather at the temple and bring their gods to the courtyard. The gods give directions by tilting left and right, followed by the villagers. Local wine tasting is another highlight, with Kinnauri wine made from fermented grapes. After the main festival, there is a smaller festival called Raunale/Sesame, where men dress up as women and dance around the village. It’s a fun way to experience Kinnauri culture.

Upon arrival in Kalpa, we make our way to our hotel and check in. Then take a moment to settle in and unwind before starting our exciting adventure in this picturesque town.
In the afternoon, head over to the Kalpa Monastery, a magnificent Buddhist monastery that offers breathtaking views of the Kinnaur Valley. Marvel at the intricate architecture. Snap some photos of the stunning vistas !!!
As the evening approaches, treat yourself to a traditional Kinnauri dinner at one of the many charming restaurants in Kalpa.
Day 3: Kinnaur – Roghi Festival Extravaganza
Immerse yourself in the vibrant hues of the Roghi Festival, the heartbeat of Kinnaur Holi. Witness the dance of flames in a bonfire, feel the rhythm of traditional music, and join the lively spectacle of colored powder swirling in the mountain air.
After that, in the afternoon we chase the spirit of Holi to the enchanting village of Sangla. Then in some time we return to Kalpa and enjoy a farewell dinner at our hotel.
Day 4: Chitkul’s Charm and the Homeward Trail
In the morning we embark on a journey to Chitkul, the mystical village standing sentinel at the Indo-Tibetan border. After seeing all the views in the afternoon, we returned to Reckong Peo. Hop on a taxi or bus, but the vistas of Kinnaur are still in my mind, a visual symphony that plays on even as you journey back to Delhi.
