Palampur is in the heart of Kangra. City residents have overlooked it, and it is also known as northwest India’s tea capital, bordered by McLeodGanj and Bir. Mornings and Evenings are bright and pleasant here due to the lush green valley. This trip wasn’t just an escape into nature; it was a unique adventure designed for both humans and their four-legged companions.
The journey towards Palampur from Delhi
We set off on our adventure with other dog lovers, taking part in a special traveler’s experience that was carefully scheduled to fit our cherished dogs. We boarded a Traveler bus in the evening, at around 7 pm, from Delhi. We stopped a few times so that we could stretch our legs and have pauses for tea and toilets. Our trip to Palampur took us approximately 13 or 14 hours.
At Palampur, the Earth House was our shelter. Picture charming mud cottages nestled against the awe-inspiring canvas of snow-draped mountains while upholding their commitment to eco-consciousness through their innovative solar power initiative.
Pilgrimage to Birni Devi Temple:
We set off on an exciting journey to get to the renowned Birni Devi Temple. The walk took us through verdant forests and rocky areas with some of the most beautiful views. We were filled with wonder at the surrounding natural beauty and a sense of spiritual connectedness as we made our way closer to the temple with each step. We were thankful for our worthwhile journey and marveled at the tranquility of the ancient temple when we arrived. We also paid our respects to Birni Devi.
Exploring charms of Tea Gardens Galore:
Palampur is also northwest India’s tea capital, and exploring its famous tea gardens became an amazing part of our trip. Walking through the tea garden’s lush slopes will make you want tea. These tea gardens are a unique sanctuary for tea enthusiasts with their scented environment, rich green carpets, and rolling slopes. Some tea farms are privately owned and closed to tourists, while others are ‘demonstration plots’ maintained by groups. Palampur Co-Operative Tea Factory is notable.
Must-Visit Spots in Palampur:
Apart from the Birni Devi Temple and tea gardens, don’t miss the Himalayan Brew Tea Estate for an authentic tea-tasting experience. Plan for a 3-4 day stay to fully immerse yourself in Palampur’s charm.
Best Time to Visit Palampur:
The optimal time to explore Palampur is from September to June, encompassing the winter season and the onset of summer. The crisp mountain air and pleasant temperatures make for an ideal backdrop to your Himalayan escapade.

Necessary things to pack for the Palampur Trip
- Packing warm clothes, rain jackets, jeans, trek pants, trek shoes, and Sweatshirts (always check the temperature before packing warm clothes accordingly)
- For pet essentials like additional food packets
- First aid kit
- Extra leash/harness and collarÂ
- Paw balm
- Travel-friendly bowls for food and water proved indispensable.Â

Tips for Travelers:
- When traveling with pets, always keep them on a leash while on the Trek.Â
- Villagers are pet friendly but the local dogs can get a bit aggressive because of territorial reasons.
- Seeking transport assistance from the hotel host is a recommended hack.
Budget for Palampur trip
For those planning a similar escapade, a taxi from Delhi to Palampur costs around 9-10k one way, while accommodation ranges from 4-4.5k per night. The total cost for a couple with a pet averages around 30-35k, excluding local travel expenses.Â
