Hello I’m your travel partner Emad, here!!!
Recently, I planned a visit to a hidden gem in Uttarakhand, Chakrata. Located between the majestic Himalayas, Chakrata stands as a peaceful haven, waiting to be discovered by enthusiastic travellers like me. Let’s start the adventure!!!
Route from Delhi to Chakrata
Last year, I decided to start on a serene journey to Chakrata, Uttarakhand, with my trusty CNG car, Ragnar. The attraction of witnessing the breathtaking sunrise from the mountains encouraged me to hit the road from Delhi at just 11:30 AM.
The plan was straightforward: reach Chakrata by 6:30 PM to catch the first rays of dawn painting the sky in hues of gold and orange.
I estimated my expenses to be around Rs. 2600 to Rs. 3000 for the entire trip. As I set out, I made a pit stop to refuel at a CNG station in Delhi, ensuring Ragnar was ready for the journey ahead. With 200 kilometres behind me, I switched to petrol for the remaining 70 kilometres, maintaining a smooth ride throughout for Rs. 3000, and it is 237 km from Delhi to Chakrata.
Accommodation in Chakrata:
I stayed in a resort-like hotel, which cost around Rs. 1200–Rs. 1500 per day (may vary). It is recommended to book in advance, especially during peak seasons.
Places to visit in Chakrata:
- Main Market of Chakrata: Explore the local market for shopping and dining experiences. Don’t miss trying Chakradha’s famous momos. Additionally, you can savour the delightful taste of Dosa, another popular choice among locals and visitors alike.
- Tiger Falls: The location is 8 km from the main market. A breathtaking waterfall amidst lush greenery
Best Food in Chakrata:
- Must-try: Chakrata’s famous momos, dosa, and other local cuisines.
- There are limited dining options, but the food is delicious and authentic.
- Carry some snacks for the road trip, as there might be limited options en route.
Hidden Gem in Chakrata :
Chilmiri Neck is Chakrata’s highest peak, nestled amid lush green deodar forests. Visitors can relish breathtaking views of the Himalayan Ranges and distant hills from this scenic spot. I’ve already shown you the top mountain hill, a hidden gem, with the pictures I shared.
Best Time to Visit:
The best time to visit Chakrata is from March to June. During this period, the weather is pleasant, making it ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. While the monsoon season (July to September) brings lush greenery, heavy rains can affect travel plans. Chakrata offers numerous attractions for families and friends, ensuring a fun and memorable trip.
Travel Tips to Chakrata
- Carry woollens, especially during winter or if visiting during snowfall (January-March).
- Be prepared for a 70-km mountain drive and 180 km of straight road.
- Pre-book accommodation and plan your itinerary, especially during peak seasons.
It was a fantastic experience in Chakrata. Unlike overhyped and crowded places like Nainital and Mussoorie, Chakrata remains largely untouched and non-commercialised. It’s just a short distance from Delhi, about 250 km away. The journey takes around 6 hours, with 70 km of mountainous roads and 180 km of straight roads. Leaving around noon or early afternoon gets you to the hotel by 7 p.m. So, it’s a convenient 6-hour drive from Delhi.
Chakrata offers a serene and unexplored getaway from Delhi, perfect for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful retreat amidst the mountains.
