Greetings, fellow trekking enthusiasts!
My name is Vishal, and here is my experience of the Kedarkantha Trek. As I got off the bus in Sankri, the starting point for the Kedarkantha trek, I felt both excited and nervous. Also, I heard about the trek’s amazing winter views but wasn’t ready for the beauty it was about to see. Moreover, the Kedarkantha Trek is an 18-kilometre journey that takes place over four days.
The Story of Kedarkantha: One Must Know
Kedarkantha is frequently confused with Kedarnath. Upon conversing with the locals, I discovered the well-known tale associated with Kedarkantha. It is essential for all those planning to trek to Kedarkantha to become acquainted with it. The name Kedarkantha signifies a location where the throat of Kedar (Lord Shiva) is believed to dwell. According to local beliefs, Lord Shiva meditated here for a week before proceeding to Kedarnath.

3 Days of Kedarkantha Trek:
Day One: Trekking from Sankri to Judha-Kha-Taal
The first day was a relatively easy trek from Sankri to Judha-Kha-Taal, covering four kilometres through dense forests. Also, the peaceful surroundings were a welcome break from city life.
I marvelled at the snow-capped mountains in the distance, their peaks shimmering in the sunlight like diamonds. Even the campsite at Judha-Kha-Taal was breathtaking, with the lake reflecting the surrounding mountains’ beauty.

I spent hours viewing and feeling grateful for the chance to experience such beauty.
Day two: Trekking from Judha-Kha-Taal to Kedarkantha Base Camp
This day was the hardest! We hiked four kilometres uphill from Judha-Ka-Taal to Kedarkantha Base Camp. My legs were tired, but I was excited to finally be there!
The mountains around the camp were covered in snow. It felt like I was right next to nature!

This trek wasn’t just hard work; it was also a special experience that made me feel refreshed and connected to the world around me. I slept at the camp that night, listening to the wind in the trees, and I was so grateful to be there.
Day Three: Sunrise at Kedarkantha
The following day, I woke up early, eager to see the sunrise from the summit of Kedarkantha. The steep trail was challenging, but the views from the top were stunning. The sun’s golden rays illuminated the snowy peaks, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, making me feel as if I were standing next to the universe itself. After descending, returned to the base camp, feeling rejuvenated, refreshed, and deeply connected with nature. Also, was thankful for the chance to witness such beauty and was ready for the next part of my journey, eager to face any challenges ahead.

Best Time to Embark on the Kedarkantha Trek
The ideal time to embark on the Kedarkantha trek is usually from December to April, during the winter season. This period offers an awe-inspiring adventure, with the path adorned in a pure, untouched layer of snow, transforming the Himalayas into a mesmerising winter paradise.
What to pack for the Kedarkantha Trek:
- Carry water essentials with you, like Mimbu pani or ORS.
- Also, carry sunscreen and sunglasses.
- Moreover, carry comfortable clothing and trekking shoes.
- Likewise, carry a knee brace if you are prone to knee injuries or have known issues with knee pain.
Tips for fellow travellers:
- It is recommended to drink a packet of ORS water daily, preferably around mid-day during your trek. This will help replenish vital salts lost during the trekking activity and also make it easier to consume cold water.
- Before starting on the trek, engage in cardio and yoga exercises for at least 30 minutes.
Must Know: The equipment cost, which includes everything I felt the need to buy as a first-time trekker, amounted to 15,000 INR.
The trek of Kedarkantha is beyond the physical challenge, i.e., a spiritual journey that leaves you feeling refreshed and connected with nature. Also, I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable experience.
