Hello trekking lovers, Jenil here!!!
I am your travel partner for an unforgettable trip to Hampta Pass Trek in July. From the daily hustle and bustle of life, I wanted a little break and to search for myself in peace. So, that’s how I decided to plan a trip with my friends and plan to climb a mountain. This trek is one of the best in India for its stunning mountain beauty. We also discovered it through the WonderWithSky YouTube channel and decided to do the trek after watching their playlist.
Route for the Hampta Pass Trek:
We took a night train from Surat to Delhi, a 12-hour journey. To travel from Surat to Delhi by train, expect to spend around Rs. 3200 for a round trip on the 3rd. After arriving in the morning, we spent the day visiting attractions like the Red Fort and Chandni Chowk, enjoying local delights. Then in the evening, we took a Volvo AC bus costing Rs. 1800 per person for a round trip and arrived at 8:00 the next morning. Also, for Kullu Valley we hired a tempo traveller.
Accommodation Suggestion for Hampta Pass Trek:
For your stay, they provide a tent for three people. Also, if you’re not comfortable with that, there’s a main tent with a capacity of 10–12 people that you can use instead.
Beginning the Hampta Pass Trek:
After reaching it, we took some time to freshen up and then got our guide for trekking. We set out to our campsite at Jobra, which took 2 hours from Manali. From Jobra, our first day of the Hampta Pass trek officially began.
Jobra to Chika: Camping Under the Stars
The way from Jobra to Chika was relatively easy, but not as easy as it seemed, allowing us to soak in the beauty of the surrounding landscapes. We also crossed several wooden bridges and small water streams, with the mighty Dhauladhar range providing a stunning backdrop of waterfalls. In between, we felt like it might rain, so we were prepared for that too.
We reached Chika in the evening, our campsite for the night. After reaching, we first learn how to make a tent for ourselves. Then we spent time viewing the beauty of the water sprawling and taking pictures. As the sun set, the sky transformed into a canvas of colours, and we gathered around a tent, sharing food, stories, and laughter.
Chika to Balu ka Ghera: Into the Heart of the Himalayas
The trek from Chika to Balu ka Ghera was tougher, with steeper climbs and rocky paths. We also walked through lovely rhododendron forests and along the Rani Nallah stream. Higher up, the terrain changed, and snow patches became more common. At Balu ka Ghera, we were surrounded by snow-capped peaks and glaciers.
Balu ka Ghera to Hampta Pass and Shia Goru
The big day arrived on our trek. We woke early, pumped to tackle the Hampta Pass. The climb was tough, but the amazing views kept us going. At 14,000 feet, we reached the top, greeted by the breathtaking sights of Lahaul Valley and Pir Panjal peaks. Feeling accomplished, we soaked it all in. Also, the descent to Shia Goru was tough too, with slippery slopes and rocks, but the beauty made it all worthwhile. Moreover, we camped by the river at Shia Goru, reflecting on our journey.
Shia Goru to Chatru: A Journey Through Contrasts
On our last trekking day, we went from the snowy Shia Goru to Chatru in Lahaul Valley. Also, the trail mixed rocks and river crossings, adding adventure. Descending, the scenery shifted from greenery to rugged mountains. At Chatru, we got picked up and driven to Chandratal, a stunning crescent-shaped lake. Moreover, the drive was thrilling, with narrow roads and cliffs. Camping by the lake, surrounded by reflected peaks in its clear waters, was the perfect end to our trek.
The Best Viewpoint for Trekking:
Chandratal Lake and Balu Ka Ghera are simply the best! Plus, at night, you can see a clear galaxy. Step out of your tent, and you’ll be amazed by the view.

Trekking to Hampta Pass is great all year, but the best time is mid-June to September. Also, the weather’s pleasant, around 13–18 °C during the day, dropping to 0 °C at night. We decided to trek in the months of June and July.
