Hello, I’m Somanshu Tomar, and I recently had the pleasure of exploring Shangarh with three friends. Nestled in the Sainj Valley of Kullu District, Himachal Pradesh, Shangarh is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. To reach this serene destination, start your journey from Delhi. Board a Volvo bus heading to the Aut tunnel. Make sure to deboard after the tunnel ends, not at the start. From here, you have a few options: hire a taxi, rent a Royal Enfield bike (only recommended for experienced riders due to the challenging roads), or opt for the local bus which operates only twice a day.
The Enchanting Meadows
Shangarh boasts breathtaking meadows, believed to have been planted by the Pandavas. These lush green fields will leave you wondering why you hadn’t visited earlier. The area also offers nearby hikes for those who love to explore nature on foot.
Barshangarh Waterfall
Just 2-3 km from the Hosteller, you’ll find the beautiful Barshangarh Waterfall. After a moderate trek of around 800 metres to 1 km, you’ll reach this peaceful spot. It’s an ideal place to relax and soak in the natural beauty.
Twin Towers of Raila
For those with a bike and some extra time, consider visiting the Twin Towers of Raila on your way back. This detour adds an extra layer of adventure to your trip.
Accommodation and Food
For your stay, the Hosteller is highly recommended. It offers comfortable accommodations and delicious food. Another option is Zostel, but the Hosteller’s charm makes it the preferred choice. For local dining, don’t miss the Mountain Cafe, Shangarh, located just 200 meters from the Hosteller. It’s the best desi dhaba around.
Essentials for the Trip
Pack a raincoat and winter clothing as the weather in Shangarh can change suddenly. A torchlight is essential since the roads are not well-lit. Renting a bike from Aut tunnel or Bhuntar is a great idea, but keep in mind you’ll need to travel 13 km back to pick it up. Having your own bike allows you to explore more freely, as local bus services in Shangarh are limited. Always keep your fuel tank full; you can buy petrol at local shops for a slightly higher price (20-30 INR more).
Budget Breakdown
- Delhi to Bhuntar: Volvo bus – 1200 INR
- Bike rental: 1000-1200 INR per day
- Cab charges: 500-600 INR one way
- Bus ticket: Around 50 INR (operates only twice a day)
- Hosteller stay: 400-600 INR per dorm/day
- Food: Local dhabas for breakfast and lunch, thali at the Hosteller for dinner (180-200 INR)
Important Tips
Only rent a bike if you’re an experienced rider and avoid overconfidence. The roads can be tricky, and assistance is limited. Shops close after sunset, so purchase any necessities beforehand. It’s best to stay indoors after dark as the area is part of the Great Himalayan National Park. While generally safe, it’s better to be cautious.
The Magic of Shangarh
If you’re seeking an escape from the crowded, hectic tourist spots and yearn for a true hill station vibe with stunning views, fresh air, and thrilling bike rides, Shangarh is the place to be. Each season brings its unique charm: lush green landscapes in the rainy season, a snowy wonderland in winter, and golden-brown vistas just before winter. The locals hold this place in high regard, so please be respectful during your visit. Sit back, soak in the beauty, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Explore the nearby temples and embark on leisurely walks to fully appreciate this magical destination.
