Accompany me on my 6-day travel journey to Munnar. India’s diverse landscape, from mountains to beaches and historic sites, reflects its rich culture, earning it the title of ‘Incredible India’. Kerala, in South India, is a prime example, boasting nature’s bounty, including waterfalls, tea gardens, and backwaters, along with vibrant cultural traditions.
How do I reach Munnar?
To reach Munnar from Kochi Airport (COK), the cheapest option is by bus, which costs around Rs. 550 to Rs. 850 and takes approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Places to visit in Munnar:
- Cheeyappara Waterfall:
A beautiful cascading waterfall on the way to Munnar. Halt here for a while and enjoy the soothing sound of the water falling from the rocks and going down the river. Click on group photos and selfies to carry the memory of this place.
- Valara Waterfall:
There’s another stunning waterfall about 10 km from Kochi on the way to Munnar. It’s a graceful sight, nestled amidst lush green trees.
- Spice Garden:
Munnar is famous for its home grown spices, herbs, and medicinal plants. A tour of this garden will help you gain good insights about its use in cooking and as a medicine for various ailments.
Must Know: Kerala’s fertile soil is perfect for growing medicinal plants, renowned for their healing properties. Make sure to visit the shop inside the Spice Garden and purchase these beneficial products.
- Mattupetty Dam:
This dam is around 10–12 km from Munnar. The green valleys, cool weather, and peace of the place make it a must-visit for tourists. Just a few minutes away is a beautiful lake that offers boat rides. In Munnar, they use this dam to generate electricity.
- Kundala Dam and Lake:
Another Dam similar to Mattupetty Dam. If boating interests you, you can take boat rides that look like Shikara boats.
- Eravikulam National Park:
This is the sanctuary of an endangered goat called ‘Nilgiri Tahr’. The National Park is at a high altitude. According to some locals, the highest point in South India is reached by tourists riding a government-managed bus, as private cars are not permitted to go to the top. Upon reaching the National Park, expect to walk 1–1.5 km uphill. The view from the top is breathtaking, especially with fog during monsoons. Keep in mind that it’s a steep climb, so plan accordingly.
Must Know: The park closes at the start of the year, so make sure to plan your visit accordingly.
- Tea Museum and Tea Gardens:
The Tea Museum in Munnar is famous for its tea plantations and factories. It offers insights into the history and evolution of tea in the region. Visitors can watch a short film and learn about green tea and its myths. Additionally, the museum provides a briefing and a tour of the tea-making process.
Must know:
- After your visit, sample various types of tea and choose which one to buy.
- If you plan to purchase tea, consider buying from the local market, as it’s more affordable there.
Hidden gems of Munnar, Kerala:
- Kathakali: This is a very unique dance form of Kerala wherein the performer is dressed very loudly with heavy make-up and a tomb-like turban, narrating the story of the Ramayana. Their expressions are very artistic, with flexible eyebrow movements. It is simply amazing to watch them perform.
- Kalaripayattu: This is a famous and traditional martial art in Kerala. The artists are uniquely flexible and perform using various weapons like swords, spears, shields, etc. This ancient form of martial art is believed to have influenced the development of karate, judo, and kung fu. It is a matter of pride to have this art originating in India.
Must Know:
- Shows are held every evening, each lasting an hour.
- Weekends and holidays get crowded, so book tickets in the morning for smooth sightseeing.
- Elephant ride: Your Kerala trip is incomplete if you miss taking the elephant ride. The ride ranges from about 30 to 40 minutes. These rides are a must-do in Kerala, lasting around 30–40 minutes. They get busy on weekends, so it’s best to do them first thing in the morning. A couple’s ride typically costs around Rs. 700.

For the best time to visit Munnar, aim for November to February. Yet, if you want to witness its true beauty, plan your trip during the monsoon season in August and September.

- Comfortable clothing that covers their shoulders and knees.
- Carry a water bottle and snacks while travelling.
- Pack sunscreen lotions and sunglasses.
- Basic medicines and some cash.

- You’ll find Indian food in most major restaurants, including vegetarian options serving delicious Keralite dishes.
