Day 1: Exploring Patna’s Heritage and Culture for Patna

After settling in and freshening up, we wasted no time and set out to explore the city. Our first stop was Golghar, an impressive granary built by the British in 1786. Climbing the spiral staircase to the top gave us a panoramic view of Patna and the majestic Ganges River. We also spent some time taking in the view and then indulged in some delicious street food nearby, savouring Litti Chokha, a traditional Bihari dish.
Next, we visited the Bihar Museum, a modern establishment showcasing the state’s rich history and heritage. We spent hours exploring the diverse exhibits, from ancient artefacts to contemporary art. Moreover, the interactive displays and detailed information made the visit both educational and enjoyable. The entry fee for Indians was just 50 INR per person.
Our final destination for the day was Takht Sri Patna Sahib, a significant Sikh pilgrimage site. The serene and spiritual atmosphere of the Gurudwara was incredibly calming. Likewise, we participated in the langar (community meal), a wholesome and humbling experience. For dinner, we visited a local restaurant and tried a traditional Bihari thali, which included dishes like Sattu paratha, dal, and pickles.

Near Kumhrar, we enjoyed some local street food, including chaat and samosas, which were absolutely delicious.
Our journey through history took us next to Agam Kuan, an ancient well-linked to Emperor Ashoka. The site’s historical significance and mysterious aura made it a captivating stop, especially as we learnt about its ties to Ashoka’s regret following the Kalinga War, adding depth to our visit.
Afterwards, we took a short trip to the ruins of Nalanda University, a renowned ancient centre of learning and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Moreover, the vast ruins and the rich history of this prestigious institution were truly awe-inspiring. Following our tour of Nalanda, we enjoyed a meal at a nearby dhaba, savouring traditional Bihari cuisine, including aloo bhujia, rice, and curd.
