I’m a passionate traveler, always eager to explore new places. My latest adventure took me to the mesmerising destinations of South India. Accompanied by my travel partner, we embarked on a 5-day journey to discover the cultural and natural beauty of Madurai, Rameshwaram, Dhanushkodi, and Kodaikanal. Here’s a glimpse into our incredible trip.
From midnight flights to ancient temples
Our journey began with a midnight flight from Pune to Madurai, costing us ₹9,000 per person for a round trip. Also, we arrived early in the morning, ready to explore this ancient city, known for its rich cultural heritage and historic temples.
We stayed at the Madurai Residency Hotel, a comfortable 3-star accommodation costing ₹2,500 per night. Also, in Kodaikanal, we stayed for two days at the Hilltop Towers Hotel, also a 3-star hotel, at the same rate of Rs 2,500 per day.
The journey was undertaken by a couple of travellers who opted for road travel. We used a combination of train and bike for their transportation needs, covering fares as required.
Must Know: If travelling by flight, it takes approximately 4 to 5 hours to reach Madurai. However, for those opting to travel by train from Pune to Madurai, the journey takes around 29 hours.
Day 1: Madurai—The Temple City
The highlight of our day was the iconic Meenakshi Amman Temple, where we opted for the VIP entry at ₹100 per person. The temple’s stunning architecture and the vibrant atmosphere left us speechless. After the temple visit, we indulged in authentic South Indian cuisine at Murugan Idli, renowned for its variety of chutneys, and explored the bustling streets of Madurai.
Day 2: Spiritual Rameshwaram and Mysterious Dhanushkodi
The next morning, we set out for Rameshwaram, hiring a cab for ₹5,800 for a round trip, including sightseeing and toll taxes. Also, Rameshwaram is a significant pilgrimage destination, and we visited the sacred Ramanathaswamy Temple, famous for its intricate corridors and sacred water tanks. The spiritual energy of the temple was truly captivating. Moreover, there is no entry fee. On the Pamban Bridge, we were amazed by its engineering and the breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean.
Later, we travelled to Dhanushkodi, a ghost town known for its haunting beauty and historical significance. Also, the entry fee to Dhanushkodi was ₹40, and the lighthouse visit cost us ₹10 per person. We stood at the edge of India, where the Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean, taking in the breathtaking views and the serene atmosphere.
Day 3-4: The Scenic Beauty of Kodaikanal
On the third day, we travelled to Kodaikanal, a beautiful hill station nestled in the Western Ghats. Also, the cab ride from Madurai to Kodaikanal cost us around ₹2,400.
Must know: The AC government bus from Kodaikanal to Madurai costs Rs 200 per person, including luggage.
Kodaikanal offered a refreshing change from the coastal heat. Moreover, we explored the Kodaikanal Wildlife Sanctuary, paying a nominal entry fee of ₹10 per person. Also, the local sightseeing bus tour cost us ₹350, and we visited popular spots like Moir Point, Upper Kodai Lake, and the mystical Guna Caves, each with a small entry fee of ₹20. We also took a village tour, costing ₹900 per person, which provided us with a deeper insight into the local culture and way of life.
Likewise, we explored the green landscapes, visited the peaceful Kodaikanal Lake, and trekked through pine forests. The star-shaped lake, surrounded by hills, was very calming.
On the 5th day , we took an AC government bus from Kodaikanal to Madurai. The fare is ₹200 per person, including luggage. Also, arrive in Madurai and prepare for your return flight to Pune.
Hidden gems visited in South India:
Krusadai Island, a secluded paradise with crystal-clear waters; Kunthukal Beach, a serene escape away from the crowds; and Rameshwaram, a blend of spiritual serenity and natural beauty.
Also, the best season to visit South India is June; it is the summer season with beautiful weather to explore.
Food Experience in Madurai, Rameshwaram, and Kodaikanal
If you’re a fan of authentic South Indian cuisine, the food experiences in Madurai, Rameshwaram, and Kodaikanal will be a treat. Also, each location offers unique flavours and dishes that are sure to satisfy your palate.
Madurai:
- Murugan Idli Shop (near Meenakshi Temple): Famous for its fluffy idlis served with a variety of chutneys. This is a must-visit spot for breakfast enthusiasts.
- Sree Sabrees Restaurant: Renowned for its flavourful lemon rice and Veg arotta. This place offers a quintessential South Indian meal.
- Kera Wadi: Located near Meenakshi Temple Street, this eatery is known for its traditional South Indian flavours.
- Sri Sastha: A unique spot in Madurai, Sri Sastha is famous for serving cotton seed milk, a local speciality.
- Prema Villas: This restaurant is known for its unique Halwa, offering a sweet treat that you won’t find easily elsewhere.
- Vilakkuthoon: Famous for the refreshing Jigarthanda drink, a local delicacy made with milk, almond resin, and ice cream.
Rameshwaram:
Lakshmi Villas: Situated near the Ramathaswami Temple, this pure vegetarian restaurant is perfect for those looking to enjoy simple yet flavourful South Indian vegetarian dishes.
Kodaikanal:
- Astoria Veg (near Kodaikanal Bus Stand): This spot offers a variety of vegetarian South Indian dishes, making it a popular choice among travellers.
- Hotel Hill Top: Known for its serene ambience and delicious food, Hotel Hill Top is another great option for a South Indian meal.
- Meltiez Chocolate Factory: Famous for its hot chocolate and handmade chocolates, this place is a paradise for chocolate lovers.
- Pastry Corner: A quaint bakery offering a variety of pastries and baked goods, perfect for a sweet treat.
- Munchiez Cafe: Known for its casual ambience and variety of snacks, this cafe is great for a quick bite.
- Buffet Breakfast: South Indian breakfast buffets at Spicy Treat and Hotel Hill Top Pure Vegetarian Restaurant offer an array of traditional breakfast items to start your day.
- Creame Centre Bistro: A pure vegetarian bistro famous for its luxury dining experience, offering a blend of South Indian and contemporary dishes.
Challenges and Recommendations of South India
- If you’re travelling to Kodaikanal, it’s better to visit by car because there are limited public bus options. For a 3 km trip, taxis can charge around 400-500 INR.
- Also, I recommend travelling by car to enjoy the freedom of exploring at your own pace.
- Moreover, carrying a translator can be helpful, especially in deep South India, where English and Hindi might not be widely understood.
- Likewise, if you are going to the South Tour, please plan according to the weather conditions.
Essential Packing Tips
- Sunscreen and hats for sun protection.
- Cotton and linen clothes for the heat.
- Also, keep warm clothes, raincoats, or umbrellas. for the unpredictable weather in Kodaikanal.
- ORS and coconut water to stay hydrated.
