Hello, I’m Rahul. On March 23, 2024, six friends and I embarked on a six-day adventure to the stunning Spiti Valley. Here’s a detailed account of our trip, filled with breathtaking views, hidden gems, and practical tips to help you plan your own adventure.
Day 1: Shimla to Kalpa
Our journey began with a six-hour drive from Shimla to Kalpa. The drive was scenic, with winding roads and mesmerizing views of the mountains. We checked into Kinner Villa, which cost us INR 5,500 including meals, a great deal considering the delicious food we enjoyed dal, chawal, roti, and salad.
After resting, we drove to a nearby sunset point, where we were greeted by a breathtaking view. The serenity of Kalpa Monastery added to the tranquility of the evening. We returned to our hotel and ended the night with a bonfire, sharing stories and laughter under the starry sky.
Day 2: Kalpa to Tabo
The next day, we set off on an eight-hour drive to Tabo. Our first stop was the ancient Tabo Monastery, founded in 996 CE. The history and spiritual atmosphere of the monastery left us in awe.
We then visited Nako Lake, a hidden gem in the Kinnaur district. At an elevation of 12,014 feet, the lake’s beauty amidst the rugged landscape was a sight to behold.
- Our journey continued to Khab Sangam, a place surrounded by towering mountains, and then to Gue, home to a 1,000-year-old mummy. We stayed the night at Sonam Guest House, which cost us INR 4,000 including meals. The comforting dal chawal, paneer, and naan were perfect after a long day of exploration.
Day 3: Tabo to Kaza
The following day, we visited Dhankar Monastery, where we were treated to a special tea. Our next destination was Kaza, a town in the Spiti Valley. We enjoyed momos and thukpa from a local stall for just INR 150. After a restful night, we were ready for more adventures.
Day 4: Exploring Komik, Langza, and Hikkim
Our day began with a visit to Komik, one of the highest villages in the world. We then headed to Langza, where we admired a majestic Buddha statue.
Next, we went to Hikkim, known for having the world’s highest post office. Sending a letter from there, costing about INR 30-50, was a unique experience. We stayed in a cozy homestay for INR 1,500 per person, including meals.
Day 5: Chichum Bridge and Key Monastery
We crossed the Chichum Bridge, an engineering marvel, before visiting Key Monastery, perched atop a hill at 4,166 meters. The monastery’s spiritual ambiance and stunning views were unforgettable. We spent the night at Toshim Homestay for INR 4,000, where we tried some local wine, adding to the local experience.
On the final day, we embarked on our journey back to Shimla. Reflecting on our trip, we realized how deeply Spiti Valley had touched our hearts.
