Hello, fellow travellers,
In December, I found myself on a two-day trip to Honnavar, a hidden gem nestled along the coastline of Karnataka, approximately 470 km from Bangalore. What began as a routine business trip with my boss quickly turned into an adventure filled with breathtaking landscapes, local flavours, and a journey through some of the most scenic routes in southern India. With only two days in hand and a modest budget of ₹8,000 (excluding travel), the experience was more than expected.
Start Your Journey by Car from Bangalore
Honnavar is about 470 km from Bangalore, making it an ideal road trip destination. If you’re driving, plan your departure early in the morning to avoid traffic and enjoy a smooth ride. The roads are scenic, offering a beautiful blend of forests and small towns along the way.
On your way, make a pit stop at Shivamogga (also known as Shimoga). It’s a great place to rest, grab a meal, and recharge before continuing. You can also take a quick stroll around town to stretch your legs.
Day 1: Journey to Honnavar via Shivamogga and Murudeshwar
Our first stop was Shivamogga (Shimoga), where we enjoyed a hearty lunch. After a refreshing break, we hit the road again, winding through lush green landscapes and making our way towards Honnavar.
As we approached Murudeshwar, we couldn’t resist stopping to visit the famous Murudeshwar Temple, with its towering statue of Lord Shiva overlooking the Arabian Sea. The temple is awe-inspiring, and the beach behind it offers a peaceful retreat. The sea breeze was rejuvenating after the long drive.
Later in the evening, we reached Honnavar, checked into Sagar Residency, and enjoyed a delightful seafood dinner. The hotel offered both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, making it a great place to unwind after a tiring day of travel.
Day 2: Exploring Local Streets and Hidden Gems
The second day was mostly dedicated to business meetings, but we managed to explore the local streets of Honnavar in between. The local market is bustling, and though small, it offers a variety of authentic coastal dishes, including chicken and egg biryani from street vendors.
Our hidden gem discovery came in the form of Jog Falls, a short drive away from Honnavar. Jog Falls, one of India’s tallest waterfalls, is an awespiring sight. Watching the water cascade down the cliffs, evaporating mid-air, felt like witnessing a natural miracle. It’s a must-visit for anyone travelling through Karnataka.
Must Know: The accommodation cost was ₹2,000 per night for a shared room for two people. Food and local expenses amounted to ₹3,000. The total budget for two people came to ₹8,000, excluding petrol and car expenses.
The Zigzag Roads and Unexpected Adventures:
One of the most unforgettable parts of our journey was the zigzag stretch leading up to Honnavar. It’s a narrow, winding road, surrounded by thick mangrove forests. The drive can be challenging, especially for those prone to motion sickness, but the views are breathtaking. With the drizzle of rain and moonlight above us, the road had an eerie yet captivating charm.
We stumbled upon a small hut during our breaks, which added an unexpected sense of adventure to our trip. Honnavar’s lack of mobile connectivity forces you to disconnect from the world and connect with nature, offering a serene and stress-relieving experience.
Best Time to Visit Honnavar:
The best time to visit Honnavar is from October to March when the weather is pleasant and you can fully enjoy the natural beauty and outdoor activities. Avoid the monsoon season, as heavy rainfall can make the roads challenging to navigate.
Necessary Things to Pack for Honnavar:
- Comfortable clothes for a tropical climate
- Sturdy shoes (for trekking and exploring)
- Umbrella or raincoat (especially if visiting during the rainy season)
- Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses for beach visits
- Snacks and water for long stretches on the road
- Motion sickness medication (for the winding roads)
- Basic toiletries and insect repellent
Honnavar Travel Tips:
- Pack light, especially if you’re on a business trip or plan to explore the local streets.
- Also, carry cash as some small shops and eateries may not accept cards.
- Moreover, stay hydrated and bring motion sickness tablets for the winding roads near Honnavar.
- Likewise, do visit Jog Falls, a hidden gem that shouldn’t be missed while in Karnataka.
For anyone travelling through Karnataka, I highly recommend making a stop at Honnavar.
