Hello, I am Sahil Pole. Recently I went on an exciting journey to Maharashtra to experience the Velas turtle festival. As the sun set behind the bustling Mumbai skyline, I set out on a heartfelt adventure to Velas, a hidden gem in Maharashtra’s Konkan region. This journey promised a rare and enchanting experience – witnessing baby turtles emerge from their nests and make their first journey to the Arabian Sea. Little did I know that this trip would be a blend of natural wonders, historical discoveries, and warm local hospitality.
Velas Turtle Conservation: A Local Symphony of Care
The Olive Ridley turtle conservation project in Velas is a community-driven initiative. The locals, fueled by a deep sense of responsibility towards their environment, actively participate in preserving the delicate ecosystem. Every year, during the nesting season, female Olive Ridley turtles return to the shores of Velas to lay their eggs. The villagers patrol the beaches at night, identifying and protecting the nests from potential threats such as predators and human interference. The eggs are carefully collected and relocated to a protected hatchery, ensuring a higher survival rate for the baby turtles. As the hatching season approaches, the villagers organise awareness programs and turtle-watching festivals to involve the community and visitors alike.
Day 1: Arrival and Turtle Watching
How to Reach Velas
Leaving Mumbai behind, I followed a scenic route along NH66, surrounded by the lush landscapes of the Konkan region. The journey, which takes about 6-10 hours depending on stops and speed, passed through picturesque villages and coastal towns, building anticipation for the tranquillity awaiting me in Velas. Key points along the way included Khopoli, Kolad, Morbe, Shrivardhan, and Bankot.
A Day in Velas
My first day in Velas felt like stepping into a different world. Early in the morning, I joined the locals on the beach, where we watched in awe as tiny baby turtles emerged from their nests and made their way to the sea. Guided by the careful hands of the villagers, these little creatures embarked on their life’s journey, creating a magical and unforgettable moment.
Later in the morning, I relaxed on Velas Beach, the rhythmic waves offering a perfect backdrop for reflection. The serene environment encouraged me to explore a hidden cove, a peaceful retreat amidst the coastal beauty.
Accommodation and Meals
Returning to my homestay, I appreciated the blend of local charm and modern comforts. Lunch was a delightful affair, featuring delicious Konkani dishes prepared by my hospitable hosts.
Evening Exploration
As evening approached, I headed to Bankot Fort, an ancient structure with stunning views of the sea. The fort’s historic atmosphere and panoramic vistas made for an enriching visit. For a spectacular end to the day, I returned to Velas Beach to witness a breathtaking sunset from a small hill nearby, joined by fellow explorers. The sky’s changing colors mirrored the day’s varied experiences, creating a visual feast.
Nightfall in Velas
Nightfall in Velas was marked by a bonfire gathering with the locals, who shared stories of the turtle conservation efforts and the significance of their dedication. Dinner was a communal feast of local specialties, deepening my connection with the warm-hearted villagers.
Day 2: Harihareshwar and Historical Echoes
The next morning, I departed early for Harihareshwar, opting for a ferry boat from a nearby village to save time and distance, while enjoying scenic views.
Harihareshwar, with its ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, added a historical dimension to my journey. This 16th-century temple, rich in architectural beauty and adorned with intricate carvings, offered a glimpse into the region’s spiritual and cultural heritage.
Exploring the temple complex, I felt the echoes of centuries past in the sacred stones. The tranquil beaches around Harihareshwar provided a serene backdrop, blending spirituality and natural beauty seamlessly.
Best Time to Visit
While winter is the ideal time to visit coastal areas, the turtle festival in Velas occurs in March and April, when the weather is hot and humid.
Suggestions for Travelers
Accommodation
I stayed in a simple homestay, costing around Rs. 1,000 per night, inclusive of three basic vegetarian meals. Velas has several homestays to choose from based on budget and preference. I recommend Purwa Daripkar, Ridley, Virkud, and Sagari Kinara.
Activities
Visiting Bankot Fort is a must, easily accessible by road and just 15 minutes from Velas. The best time to visit is at sunset for stunning views of the Arabian Sea. On the way back to Mumbai, consider visiting Harihareshwar and Shrivardhan. For adventure seekers, a day’s stay at Kolad for river rafting is an exciting option, conveniently located on the route from Harihareshwar to Mumbai.
