Nestled amidst the majestic Kumaon and Garhwal Himalayas, Gairsain, the newly crowned summer capital of Uttarakhand, offers a tranquil escape far from the din of city life. Join me on a journey through my September 2023 exploration of this hidden paradise.
Reaching the Untamed Beauty:
Our adventure began in Bhopal, where we boarded a train to Delhi. After a brief pause in the capital, we snaked our way through the scenic hills on a train to Kathgodam, the nearest railway station to Gairsain. From there, a 10–11-hour bus ride offered glimpses of charming villages and refreshing pit stops before reaching our final destination. For those seeking a swifter journey, a 6–7-hour car ride is also an option, though consider an early start for a more relaxed experience.
Untouched Gems Await:
Gairsain boasts a unique blend of natural wonders and cultural treasures:
- Vidhan Sabha: Perched atop a hill at 7,000 ft, this architectural marvel offers stunning Himalayan views. During summer sessions or special events, a peek inside is possible.
- Helipad: Just a stone’s throw away from the Vidhan Sabha, this spot provides a breathtaking bird’s-eye view of the surrounding villages.
- Ramganga River: The crystal-clear waters of the Ramganga, Gairsain’s lifeline, are a sight to behold. While exploring near the market area, caution is advised, and a local guide is highly recommended.
- Bhairavgarhi Temple: A one-hour cab ride followed by a 90-minute trek lead you to this ancient temple atop a hill. The panoramic views from this sacred site are truly unforgettable.
- Mahadev Temple: Standing tall on the banks of the Ramganga for over 5,000 years, this temple houses intricate sculptures of Vishnu Darbar and Hanuman. A dip in the holy waters is a must for a rejuvenating experience.
- Gairsain Market: This quaint market might not be sprawling, but it holds hidden treasures – local spices, warm winter wear at affordable prices, and a glimpse into the local way of life.
A Taste of Gairsain:
Gairsain offers a limited yet delightful stay and dining experience:
- Accommodation: Options include Hotel Parvati Inn, offering clean and comfortable rooms, and guesthouses like PwD and GMVN.
- Food: Savor the local delicacies like Mandua ki roti and sabji, or indulge in comforting homestyle meals at Parvati Inn.
Essential Tips:
- Local guides are highly recommended when venturing into forests or near the river.
- Be aware of the local leopard, Guldar, and avoid venturing out alone at night.
- Due to the winding roads, plan your journey in advance, allowing ample travel time.
